TRAVEL and FASHION: shanghai, Typhoons - my sisters first experience of china

Friday 10th jUly - sunday 12th  July

Stayed up till 5 sketching, messaged my sister in Dubai as she flew from Dublin earlier, went to sleep for a few hours before getting up to sketch some more, skipped graduation, got next semesters comprehensive books from rebeka and picked up my finished label samples. Going to choose a finished design of white and pink with a slightly bigger font. Happy happy! And not too expensive :) got chatting to rebeka, Eric's and Johnny outside the dorm, they all wanted a label and we had a random shot of a guys South American alcohol to celebrate, life is crazy!

Went to pick up Rebecca at the airport, exciting! Took the maglev (50RMB and discount if you have a plane ticket from that day) and then the metro, rosie met us near Zhongshan park and we packed up my stuff and checked out of my dorm room and checked luggage into storage for the summer(5 bags managing to break a suitcase too ha!) checked in to rock and wood hostel, went to Zhongshan and failed to download ppt. Had a roomate from hell, chinese lady who came in after 1am in heels, who switched the light on, I told her to turn it off people were sleeping, she woke me around 7 with her alarm going off non stop even though she was awake, so I told her off in chinese ha! Organised my info for a ppt and failed to find computers in the library, wtf! Thankfully the one in the hostel has ppt and I did that later on. Left rosie off at the metro and Rebecca and I headed to yu yuan gardens 豫园

the forecasted typhoon had begun last night (the chinese were scared, lots of messages from my chinese friends, i thought it wasnt too bad but people had to be evacuated in Fuzhou and a few died, eek! apparently it turned just before Shanghai so wasnt that bad) Rain was still on pretty heavy but the wind had died right down, when the typhoon started last night the rain was really heavy and the wind was howling, lots of bunches were down and lots of shops just didn't open, the chinese were all super worried, got message from Linda saying stay indoors and jeccy, plus the mobile sim companies all sent out warning messages to stay inside, lol.
Reb liked yu yuan gardens and the rain made it all cooler with a slight breeze. Was a nicer version of home. Going round some shops, eating Baozi 包子 and delicious Chou doufu 臭豆腐with soy bean sauce. We went back and later went to the pudong 浦东 area to look. At the skyscrapers. Some we were unable to see but we did go to the amazing new Disney store . Interactive moving images, SHANGHAI based some of them, however very very expensive! We went round one of the shopping malls before heading back. Thankfully no rude annoying chinese lady staying in our room this time -  Needless to say, exhausted was no word to describe how I felt, thankfully we did not have this tonight.

got an extension till tomorrow for the deadline. another wet and rainy day due to the typhoon, its worse at night with howling winds and heavy rain, the chinese are all really panicking however its not so bad, ive had worse at home in Belfast. however it didnt apparently divert from shanghai last moment and go elsewhere

. i took rebecca around the bund 外滩, the rain had ceased and we could see all the buildings, we went round the back streets behind the bund, seeing some buildings I hadnt seen before, we then walked through Nanjing Road 南京东路  down to peoples square 人民广场seeing the marriage market, I was going around reading some of the details out to rebecca. the parents of the individual sit with an open umbrella with a piece of paper with their childs details, so odd! from here we walked around the park, the small lake had huge lillies and lily pads open in it, along with an odd man painting with no shirt on, weird shorts and a paper bag on his head - the local crazy i presume.

we then went to xujiahui cathedral 徐家汇 大教堂 before going back to relax and heard for the train. a disastrous wait, we weren‘t sure if it would be cancelled or not, they changed the queue then changed it back again. after waiting we discovered this, got a text to say it was delayed but it wasnt on the board. we rushed to the gate with 10 minutes before it closed having had the bag checked as a battery power pack was left in it - only then for it to be confirmed it was delayed another 2 hours till 11. we finally arrived in Guilin 桂林around 2 - getting the bus into town and then a taxi to Scoozi bar hostel. into a 4 bed female dorm with memory foam mattress. heaven!
